Pavé Specialty Bakery, established in 1992, is becoming a downtown Everett institution. It's a bakery, a catering hub and a soup, salad and sandwich hot spot. It is worthy of such status?

St. Clair Child and Youth Services is once again taking orders for its 19th annual Box Lunch Social. About 2,000 lunches are made every year, complete with either a ham and cheese or egg salad sandwich on a kaiser, a drink, fruit, cookies, a small prize and the famous Lunch Box Pickle. Deliveries are made across the county, said Cheryl Cassin, a community relations coordinator.

I can testify to this, being surprised last weekend at the high quality of a lunchtime steak sandwich and salad leaves (costing six pounds or so) in a Shepherd Neame outlet.

The steak special is made with thinly chopped beef, butchered in-house daily, and is sautéed with mushrooms, onions and your choice of peppers: sweet and/or hot. Served with melted American or Provolone cheese on an Italian roll with a thin, crisp crust and a soft interior to soak up the juices.
